Did you know that in the past three years, the Hawaiian Islands hosted an average of 10 million visitors per year (HTA, 2024)? Over-tourism degrades our islands’ natural resources, overcrowds local spots, and increases the cost of living.
Debbie Misajon, founder of The Coconut Traveler (TCT), is committed to flipping the negative narrative on tourism in Hawai‘i by providing an ethical and sustainable alternative.
The Coconut Traveler, Hawai‘i’s only B-Corp certified travel agency, provides Hawai‘i travel experiences that “support local communities, respect cultural heritage, and protect the environment” (2023, The Coconut Traveler). TCT ensures that guests enjoy Hawai‘i’s natural resources responsibly, support local businesses, and contribute to grassroots, mission-aligned nonprofits through a “Responsible Tourism Fee.”

Clients of TCT are invited to pay a Responsible Tourism Fee, which is calculated using a formula developed by a leading carbon offset-focused organization. In November of every year, on Giving Tuesday, The Coconut Traveler gifts the funds generated from the fee to Hawai‘i community organizations making a positive impact on the environment. In 2023, The Coconut Traveler donated $64,770 dollars to six different organizations, including Aloha Tree Alliance.

Aloha Tree Alliance (ATA) is extremely grateful for The Coconut Traveler’s generous support for the second year in a row. TCT funds have been used to supplement ATA’s Education Program, through which staff shares knowledge about the importance of native forest ecosystems and inspires the next generation of ‘Āina stewards. Mahalo nui loa, The Coconut Traveler, for all the support you’ve given to ATA, and for the excellent work you do for Hawai‘i’s community!
